How I Passed Security+ (SY0-701)

What I studied, what the exam felt like, and what I'd do differently.

I took Security+ while finishing my AAS at Houston City College and working as an IT contractor. Having real client networks to connect the material to made a big difference, because a lot of the exam is about judgment, not memorization.

My background going in

By exam day I had a few years of hands-on IT work: networking, printers, POS systems, and small-business servers. I understood how networks run day to day. What I needed was the security vocabulary and the frameworks that sit on top of that.

What I used to study

  • [your main course or book]
  • [practice exams you used]
  • My HCC cybersecurity coursework
  • Hands-on practice in my homelab

How I structured it

[How long you studied, and roughly how many hours per week]

[Your routine: videos first, then practice questions? Flashcards? Notes?]

What surprised me on exam day

[Performance-based questions, time pressure, question wording. Keep it general; CompTIA's NDA means no specific questions.]

What I'd tell someone starting now

  • Tie every concept to something real. If you can picture where a control sits on an actual network, the scenario questions get much easier.
  • Build a small lab. Seeing logs and firewall rules yourself beats reading about them.
  • [one more tip from your own experience]

What came next

Security+ gave me the foundation. I went on to pass CySA+ (CS0-003), which moves from "what is this control" to "what is this alert telling me," and I keep building out my homelab SOC to practice exactly that.
